Summer Reading

Remember those days of mandatory summer reading?

13 years post high school graduation, and they're still not enough years between now and those aweful memories! Let's see, A Separate Peace, Lord of the Flies, Cry the Beloved Country are just a few I recall, but I know there were more! I think I have just tried to forget those painful days of trying to read anywhere from 3 to 5 books in one week, maybe two! Of course, I had the entire summer, but why would I waste time reading when I could be relaxing in the summer sun!

So, let's see how good your memories are! What were some of your favorite summer reads during school or after (I am currently reading the Firstborn Series by Karen Kingsbury and loving it. It's the book Kathryn is holding, I mean "reading", in the picture). I am confident I wasn't the only one pulling out the Cliff's Notes at the last minute (did I just admit that??)

Lauren,
I LOVE those books! They are so good! Don't you feel like you are going to run into the Baxters at the grocery store? Sweet books!
Love,
Jennifer

The book I am rereading is in the "coming to america" series by Robin Lee Hatcher...i LOVE reading books about the old west. I am reading, "Promised to Me" right now, the 4th in the series...i think i'm going to go backwards in the series this time!

Hey Lauren! I love your blog! The twins are growing up so fast, it's crazy!

I always loved (how do you italics?) "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. I also liked "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

It's funny, now I'm the one enforcing summer reading.  Joshua insists he does NOT like to read and yet he'll stay up for an hour with his bed lamp on, so eager to read everything I pile on!  I wish I knew of good 'boy' chapter books.  Everything I know of is so 'girl', like my beloved Anne of Green Gables...

As you know, one of my favorites was Tequilla Mawkinbird. But my most enjoyable was the one that I (mom) read......Johnny Tremain. What school has incoming 6th graders tackle a 300 page book about war in the 1800's? And to top it off, expect them to answer 50 question about it.
